Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess, once hid herself inside a cave after a quarrel with her brother Susanoo, plunging the world into darkness. The other gods devised a plan: they placed a mirror at the cave’s entrance and performed a lively dance, making Amaterasu curious. When she peeked out and saw her own radiant reflection, she was lured from the cave, restoring light to the world.
